Why do you use temporary employees? To fill in for absentee full-timers? To help you complete special projects? To handle peak seasons? More importantly, how do you use temps? Are you using them to best of their abilities and getting the most return for your investment? Answer that last question with a resounding “Yes!” by following these five guidelines:

  1. Set clear performance expectations. You should know exactly what you want temporary employees to accomplish and provide those requirements to the staffing firm. Include what tasks you’ll expect to be performed, the skills you require the employee to have, and your expected standards of performance.
  2. Use your staff to create a benchmark. How do you know which of the agency’s tests your temps should take? What’s the lowest score you’d feel comfortable accepting? Find out by having your staffing provider assess one or two of your staff members using their skills assessment software.
  3. Maintain your standards. You’ve made it clear to the agency exactly what type of person you want at your company, in this role. If any temporary employee’s job performance is not up to par, call the staffing firm, explain the problem, and request that they replace the employee(s) immediately.
  4. Prep your staff. Your temporary employees will be more productive in a positive work environment, and your employees will contribute to that environment enormously. Make sure your staff knows where, when and why you’re using temporary employees—this will reassure them that you’re not trying to replace them. Ask them to be sure to introduce themselves and offer help to any temporary employees.
  5. Show them the ropes. Take new temporaries on a tour of your facility and be sure to share information about restrooms, break rooms, lunch and anything else they’ll need to know to get through the day with confidence. Introduce them to co-workers and onsite supervisors who can answer questions and provide direction.
