Strategic Staffing: Why (& How) to Conduct an Audit of Last Year’s Staffing Plan

As a leading Jackson staffing services firm, Staffers knows a well-thought-out staffing plan can help your company in so many important ways – from determining appropriate staffing levels to projecting talent supplies to identifying skills gaps. At the end of the day, it helps your company stay optimally staffed and better respond to business needs.

In order to ensure your staffing plan is as effective as possible going forward, you need to conduct regular audits. But where do you begin? Start by asking the following questions about your staffing plan:

  • Are the goals set forth in your staffing plan realistic? Have they been achieved? If not, which ones haven’t been met and why? Should the goal be reset or has the situation or environment changed to where it’s no longer relevant?
  • Have goals been accomplished according to the defined timeline? If not, why? Should deadlines for any upcoming or future goals be changed or modified? If so, why?
  • Are there now – and have there been in the recent past – adequate resources (such as funds, personnel, and training) in order to achieve the goals set forth in the staffing plan? If not, what areas need improvement?
  • Have priorities changed at all throughout the year? Are the goals and needs defined still relevant? Or should focus be placed elsewhere?
  • What can be learned from auditing your plan to improve future staffing activities?

When answering these questions, be as honest and detailed as possible. It’s not going to do you any good to paint a rosy picture if there are truly issues of concern. And, if there are changes to be made to your staffing plan, define what they are and when and how they will be implemented.

While the end of the year is an ideal time to audit your staffing plan, you may also need to do it more frequently throughout the year. If there is rapid change happening on a regular basis at your company, then biannual or quarterly auditing could make more sense.

Auditing your strategic staffing plan takes time and effort. But when you take on the task, you’ll be able to create the most effective staffing plan, helping you identify gaps, create a more flexible and responsive workforce, better meet company-wide staffing needs – and ultimately put your organization ahead of your competition.
