Being a recruiter requires wearing multiple hats. Not only are you working with candidates, but you are also working with clients and establishing liaisons between the two groups. Recruiters have to know how to best serve their candidates and clients, and in a lot of ways, this position is about both being a good salesman, a career counselor, and advisor, which is what makes it both exciting and challenging.

How can you become a highly successful recruiter?

  1. Network

Networking is one of the most essential elements of recruiting. By meeting people and forging relationships, you can build a client and talent base as well as learn how to better communicate with others. Linked-In is a great networking source. Join groups that are relevant to your field, education, and interests.

  1. Follow Up

The most successful recruiters are quick to follow up. According to Mary Lorenz on the HiringSite blog, “Among the top complaints clients and candidates have when it comes to staffing firms is their responsiveness – or lack thereof.” If you respond to your candidates and clients in a timely manner, you will gain the reputation of being the best recruiter to work with, which will attract more clients and top candidates.

  1. Know the Trends

If you don’t know how to reach out to top talent, recruiting becomes a much more difficult job. Job searching has changed drastically over the past several years, as more and more job seekers are using their mobile devices and social media outlets to find jobs.

  1. Know Your Candidates and Clients

Successful recruiters take the time to get to know their candidates and clients, so they can place candidates in positions where they’ll be most successful and find employees for clients that will fit their company culture. Recruiting is about quality, not quantity. Your candidates and clients will appreciate your attention to detail.

  1. Maximize Your Time

It’s easy to be distracted by social media outlets and the plethora of daily tasks that will come your way everyday as a recruiter. Rather than limit your social media use (which can be helpful in recruiting) or get bogged down in which task to complete first, set aside some time to look at your social media outlets for recruiting.

Also, at the end of each day, write down the three most important tasks you need to accomplish the next day, and begin with those three tasks. Once your most important work is done, you can focus on the other tasks at hand.
