New Job? Here’s How to Start on the Right Foot

Temporary vs direct hire

You’ve been searching for weeks and finally landed a new job. You’ve put a ton of effort into re-designing your resume, writing the perfect cover letter, and preparing for your interview. Now, you’re sitting at your new desk and trying to learn new company policies, procedures, and culture. In the first weeks of your new job, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, or even miss your old job. We have some tips for navigating the uncertainty of the first few weeks and get started on the right foot.

  1. Get to know your co-workers

In the bustle of getting settled into your new job, don’t forget to introduce yourself to all of your co-workers. Getting to know them will not only help you get a sense of the office culture, but it will also make it easier for you to solve simple solutions, like finding the paperclips or Post-it Notes.

  1. Set expectations for yourself

According to Amanda Augustine of TheLadders, featured in Business Insider’s “9 Things Successful People do in the First Week of a New Job,” the first three months of your new job are like an extended interview. Therefore, you have to continue to impress. One way to accomplish this is setting expectations with your supervisor for what you should accomplish in your first months. This will help you learn how to manage your time and organize your schedule in the first few weeks.

  1. Establish a routine

In your first week, try your best to create a solid routine for yourself. While establishing a routine is just generally good life advice, it will also pay off in an office setting, where you may be responsible for tasks that you’re still getting the hang of. Being organized and establishing a good routine will not only help you keep track of a slew of new responsibilities, but it will also help you determine how long it takes you to complete these tasks and projects. This will help you set your productivity at a good pace.

  1. Be yourself!

Most importantly, just be yourself! It can be difficult to join a new company, especially if it feels like everyone knows each other and exactly what they are supposed to be doing at all times. You might be tempted to try to fit in, but you were hired for the position because you stood out for being you. Pretty soon, you’ll get to know your co-workers and fit right in.
