Has it been awhile since you’ve had an interview or even a call from a potential employer? It may be time to take a look at how you’re conducting your job search. You may need to revise your approach, your materials or your attitude.

1. Do some homework.

Once you’ve put your resume on a job board, employers may not necessarily see it.  Monster and Career Builder have millions of resumes in their databases – that’s a lot for an employer to weed through.  You need to be proactive.

2. Update your materials.

Does your resume need updating with any new experience, skills or information? And how does it look? Is it outdated and boring? Check out what other people in your field are doing to help their resumes stand out visually by Googling resumes in your field.  Then, update your portfolio or website with new projects or new material. Don’t forget to update the relevant information on your social networks – Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, especially.

3. Create a new set of goals and objectives.

Look at what you’ve done in the past in your job search. Have you met your prior goals or objectives? Set new goals for what you need to work on, what you want to accomplish, and where you want to be in a set period of time – say, by the end of the year. Make sure to make your goals realistic, specific and attainable – and make them dependent on your own actions, not anyone else’s.

4. Revamp your job search plan.

Now that you have done your homework and set new goals, construct a new job search strategy. Every job search needs a plan, which should include specific tactics for how to accomplish your goals and a timeline to keep you on track. You need to have a solid sense of direction for your job search.

5. Think outside the box.

What are some things you haven’t done yet for your job search? Maybe you haven’t built a portfolio, started a blog, set up any informational interviews, or set yourself up as an expert in your field on Twitter. Pick a few tactics you haven’t yet tried in your job search, and get started. If your old approaches haven’t worked, the new ones just might.

6. Reach out to professionals.

You don’t need to go it on your own. If you’re a college graduate, ask the Career Services office at your alma mater what kind of assistance they can offer. Do they participate with a job site?  Do they hold job fairs?   Do they have alumni you can network with? Do they run any networking groups? When a job search gets discouraging, it can be good to have expert help on your side.
