How to Find Employees for “Those” Jobs

Although the U.S. unemployment rate remains relatively high, finding employees for certain positions is still difficult. Whether it’s initially filling the position or keeping it filled due to high turnover rates, some job openings are just more challenging than others, and let’s be honest – not every job is an appealing one.  Oftentimes, jobs are hard to fill because a job seeker may be leery of some of the job requirements such as required travel, hours, or job duties. However, with the right hiring approach, no position is impossible to fill. When hiring for those hard-to-fill positions, consider the following strategies:

  • Be 100% honest and open. You don’t want to sugar coat the job to make it sound more glamorous than it may actually be. Realistic job previews let the applicants know what they are truly getting into. While this creates a situation where more people will not take the position, it makes it much more likely that the ones who do accept the job will stick around because there won’t be any surprises.
  • Highlight the positive aspects. Although you’ll want to be straightforward about the downsides, be sure to spell out the benefits. What makes your workplace unique?  Maybe you order lunch once a week, have a close-knit employee environment, or provide excellent health coverage.  Also, keep in mind who will like the job. Something that may not necessarily appeal to you, such as dressing down, working outside, or having nontraditional hours may be the key selling point to the right individual.
  • Be the kind of boss you would want to work under. Statistically speaking, most people enjoy what they do; the bigger and more powerful issue is that people many times just don’t like where they’re doing it, or who is in charge. The key components to any job are the work involved, the company, and the supervisor. If you can sell at least two of those main points, you’re on the right track; however, the most critical variable when it comes to retaining employees is the management.

Remember – no job is impossible to fill. If you are open and truthful about all aspects of the position you are hiring for, you will, in time, find the right candidate. If you are struggling with finding and retaining employees for a specific position, contact Staffers today!
