A proven hiring process is one that works. While this statement is true, it is important to keep in mind that your company’s hiring process should be an ongoing work in progress. Just because your current process is successful does not mean you should rely on that process solely. What may seem “perfect” now will eventually become stagnant and less effective if not properly cared for and revisited on a regular basis.

Although hiring managers and human resources professionals are equipped with many new tools of the trade, recruiting in general has not changed drastically over the years. Many HR departments still focus on traditional processes and methods without seeing a need to bring in additional innovation. While some employers still follow the “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” school of thought, company growth is especially challenging without the willingness to move forward. If you’re finding your own company’s hiring process to be in a rut, try branching out with the following:

  • Video interviews. Video interviews are no longer a taboo subject, and many candidates find them much more effective and less stressful than traditional interviews. Truthfully, most interviews do not lead to a job offer and a video interview is a great way to cut back on travel expenses and other related costs during the initial candidate screening. Additionally, video interviews can be recorded and used to gain input from other team members or revisit specific points when making decisions.
  • New media communication. Providing your candidates with feedback quickly and conveniently is a great way to positively gain an advantage against the competition. Connecting with candidates with popular technologies such as company mobile apps or social networks are not only easy ways to connect and communicate with your potential candidates, it puts you on their level and makes a lasting impression.
  • Online assessments. Take the time to set up a screening test that can be administered online and scored immediately to provide both you and the candidate helpful feedback. These tests can greatly reduce your workload, improve the candidate experience, and result in much stronger hires.

Adding on to an already successful hiring process is a great way to ensure your company will continue to grow in the direction you want while continuing to find and hire the best employees.  While a full process makeover may not be necessary, slight tweaking to existing methods or trying new ideas can help keep your process fresh to avoid becoming stagnant and ineffective.
