Summer is just around the corner. How do you plan to keep your staff on track throughout the season? If you’re not sure, here are seven outside-the-box strategies for keeping employees engaged and productive:

  1. Kick your employees out (side). As one of Jackson’s top staffing agencies, Staffers knows summer provides the perfect opportunity to mix up your typical routine and enjoy the outdoors more. Rather than holding indoor meetings and conferences, take it outside. And with laptops, tablets and Wi-Fi, everyone can still stay plugged in, while soaking up some Vitamin D.
  2. Give back with an “in-the-community” day. Select a cause your company wants to support and invite employees to take a workday off to volunteer for it. Whether they’re planting trees in the local park, painting schools or building homes for the poor, working together toward a common goal will foster a sense of teamwork and camaraderie…not to mention make a difference in the community.
  3. Help your staff balance their busy lives. A healthy work life balance seems to be missing for so many of today’s workers. Make sure your employees aren’t frazzled this summer by offering a more flexible schedule. Let them leave an hour or two early on Friday afternoons during summer, or work remotely more often. Allow them to wear casual clothes on certain days of the week. And encourage them to take a break and take a walk throughout the day.
  4. Host team-building events that are actually fun. Re-energize your team by hosting a team-building activity outside during the workday. For instance, take your team down to the closest river or pond for an afternoon of canoeing or kayaking. Invite people who don’t usually work together to pair up.
  5. Sponsor a picnic…with a twist. Host a family picnic with your employees and their families. Re-energize the traditional by adding a contemporary twist with an ice cream or lunch truck on the grounds. Or have a photo booth or dunk tank where employees can get “revenge” on their bosses.
  6. Get happy at happy hour. Once a week, invite your employees to a happy hour after work. Host it nearby, whether on the company deck, or at a bar in walking distance from the office.
  7. Reward your people. At the end of the day, money talks. And when employees are rewarded – think extra days off, a bonus, or frequent flyer miles – for meeting certain milestones, it goes a long way toward keeping them engaged during the summer.
