The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed the job market. Some industries exploded while others slowed down. If your former career falls into one of the latter categories and you are currently looking for a new job, you might consider a career pivot, at least for the time being. Different industries tend to have different lingos, so you may find that the job descriptions aren’t similar to the industries you’ve previously worked in. Not to worry, though! Some skills always transfer. Once you identify these skills, you can decide whether or not you should apply. Here’s how to start:

Identify your transferrable skills.

Review your resume, or make a list of your previous jobs. Then, ask yourself what your responsibilities were and their corresponding skills. You can also ask yourself questions, such as whether or not you had to be a good communicator or find creative solutions to a variety of problems. Write down a list of these skills to incorporate in your resume, cover letter, and interviews. According to Forbes, seven major transferrable skills include technical, communication, critical thinking, multitasking, teamwork, creativity, and leadership. If you’re not sure where to start, begin with these!

Incorporate these skills into your resume.

Update your resume to highlight the transferrable skills required in your new industry of choice. You can look at some of the job descriptions for open positions in your desired industry as a guiding light for how to describe your previous responsibilities. You can also incorporate this information under a “Skills” heading at the end of your resume. Then, you can practice incorporating these new keywords into your interview responses.

Work with a staffing firm!

Last but not least, staffing firms identify what skills you’ve gained from your previous career and apply those directly to the types of jobs that are available right now. They have insight into who’s hiring, access to jobs that aren’t listed anywhere else, and they can get you in front of the right people fast. Call Staffers today if you are looking for a temporary, temp-to-perm, or direct hire position in office clerical and administration.
