Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out

Learning Week (May 12–16) is the perfect time to invest in yourself—and that includes polishing your online presence. Whether you’re actively job hunting or simply want to grow your professional brand, your LinkedIn profile is one of the most powerful tools you have. A few small updates can make a big difference in how you’re seen by recruiters, hiring managers, and potential clients.

Here’s how to make your LinkedIn profile stand out:

1. Profile Picture: Up Close and Offset

Your profile photo should be a clear, up-close shot of your face—ideally offset slightly to one side, not centered. This helps your face stand out in search results and makes you more approachable. Skip the blurry selfies or overly formal headshots—choose a professional yet friendly photo. This will make you seem approachable and draw potential connections to your profile! One Staffers employee in our office mentioned those chose to do take a meeting (and even do business!) with a company based off a first impression of a friendly, yet professional picture.

2. Background Banner: Show Your Story

Your background image is an underrated space to share your personality. Use this to visually represent something about you—travel photos, your alma mater, your current company’s logo, a shot from a work event, or even a cityscape that reflects your goals. Just make sure the resolution is high-quality and the image is relevant to your professional story. Staffers Inc. employees use the Jackson, MS downtown scape. This is meaningful to us since a majority of our clients live and/or work in the Greater Jackson area.

3. Customize Your URL

Clean up your LinkedIn URL by removing the random string of numbers and letters. A personalized link like linkedin.com/in/janedoe looks more professional and is easier to include on resumes, email signatures, and business cards.

4. About Section: Tell Us Who You Are

This is your chance to highlight what makes you you. Don’t just list titles—showcase your strengths, passions, and what drives you in your career. Consider taking the CliftonStrengths Finder to identify your top personality traits and soft skills, then weave those into this section. Let your authenticity come through.

5. Be Active: Post 3 Times a Week

LinkedIn rewards consistency. Aim to post at least three times a week to stay visible in your network. You can share articles, job updates, company news, or even short thoughts related to your industry. Engaging with others’ content (likes, comments, shares) also helps your profile appear in more feeds. Staffers Inc. is part of the American Staffing Association, local city and county chambers, and also follows some of our client’s LinkedIn pages. We share interesting articles and posts to not only promote our friends, but to get the word out about Staffers and how we want to help our partners and others!

6. Bonus Tip: Skills & Endorsements

Make sure your top skills are listed, and ask colleagues to endorse you. Endorsements validate your abilities and help recruiters find you in searches related to those skills.
