Master Your Interview: The dos and don’ts

Confident hr manager holding job interview in modern

Whether you’re stepping into a corporate office, a medical clinic, or an industrial facility, the way you present yourself during an interview can make all the difference. At Staffers, we’ve helped countless candidates land their dream roles, and we’ve seen firsthand what separates a great interview from an average one.

If you’re getting ready for your next big opportunity, here are practical job interview tips Mississippi professionals should know — including what to do and what to avoid.

Before Your Interview

1. Research the Company

Take time to learn about the company’s mission, values, and culture. Check out their website and social media pages. When you show that you understand who they are and what they do, it tells the interviewer you’re genuinely interested and not just applying everywhere.

Bonus tip: If you’re working with Staffers, your recruiter can give you valuable background on the company before your interview. We often know what the hiring manager values most!

2. Practice Common Questions

Interviewers often ask about your experience, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Practice your answers aloud, so you feel confident and natural.

Some examples:

  • “Tell me about yourself.”
  • “Why do you want to work here?”
  • “Can you describe a time you solved a problem at work?”

Bonus Tip: Think of unique answers that will set you apart from other candidates. Your recruiter can help you practice and refine your responses so they sound authentic and polished.

3. Dress Professionally

Your outfit doesn’t need to be fancy, but it should fit the workplace environment. For a business office, go with business casual. For an industrial setting, clean and neat attire is key. When in doubt, dress slightly more formal than you think you need to. When it comes to interviews, the saying “dress to impress” really does go along way.

4. Bring the Essentials

Always bring a few copies of your resume, a pen, and a notepad. Even if you applied online, having these materials on hand shows preparation and professionalism.

During Your Interview

1. Arrive Early

Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before your scheduled time. It gives you a moment to relax, review your notes, and show respect for the interviewer’s time. And if you happen to hit traffic, you have a comfortable cushion of time.

2. Show Enthusiasm

A smile and positive energy go a long way. Employers want to hire people who are not only qualified but also pleasant to work with. Make eye contact, nod when listening, and express interest in what’s being discussed.

3. Listen Carefully

An interview is a two-way conversation. Listen to the questions and take a brief pause before answering. This shows you’re thoughtful and engaged. Make notes where you feel the information is pertinent to post-interview review.

If you’re unsure about a question, it’s perfectly fine to ask for clarification. That can actually make you look more confident.

4. Ask Thoughtful Questions

When the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions for us?” always say yes. Prepare at least two.
Examples:

  • “What qualities make someone successful in this position?”
  • “How would you describe the team dynamic here?”

These questions show curiosity and initiative — traits employers in Jackson value highly.

Avoid During the Interview

1. Don’t Speak Negatively About Past Employers

Even if your last job wasn’t a great experience, stay professional. Focus on what you learned and how it prepared you for this new role. Negativity can raise red flags.

2. Don’t Overshare

Keep your answers relevant to the job. Avoid going off-topic or discussing personal details that don’t relate to your work experience.

3. Don’t Interrupt

Let your interviewer finish their thoughts before responding. Active listening shows maturity and respect.

4. Don’t Forget to Follow Up

Send a quick thank-you email within 24 hours. Mention something specific from your conversation to make it personal. It’s a simple gesture that can make you stand out from other applicants.
