As Thanksgiving arrives this week, many of us look forward to gathering around a table filled with family, food, and traditions. It is a time to pause, enjoy the company of others, and reflect on the things we are grateful for. There is another table worth appreciating this season: the one you sit at every day at work.
Gratitude in the workplace is more than a feel-good concept. It is a powerful mindset that strengthens teams, boosts morale, and improves performance. This year, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, it is the perfect time to look at the workplace through a new lens: the Thanksgiving table.
The Thanksgiving Table of Teamwork
Think about a classic Thanksgiving meal. It is never created by one person alone. Everyone brings something.
- Someone brings the turkey.
- Someone brings the dressing.
- Someone brings the rolls, desserts, or their famous sweet potato casserole.
Each dish is different, but together they create a meaningful and memorable experience.
The same is true in the workplace.
Every role on a team contributes something essential:
- Recruiters bring talent.
- Administrators bring organization.
- Hiring managers bring leadership and direction.
- Accounting brings clarity.
- HR brings support and structure.
- Marketing brings visibility and momentum.
A workplace thrives when everyone brings their strengths to the table. When we recognize and appreciate those contributions, the entire experience improves.
Reframing Gratitude at Work
It is easy, especially during busy seasons, to focus on what is stressful or overwhelming. Gratitude does not mean ignoring challenges. It simply shifts the lens.
Here are a few ways to reframe workplace gratitude this Thanksgiving:
1. Be grateful for your work, not just at work.
Work provides more than a paycheck. It offers purpose, community, growth, and the chance to contribute to something bigger than yourself.
2. Notice the small things.
Whether it is a coworker who helps without being asked, a leader who listens, or a team member who brings positivity to the office, small moments matter. Beth, our Staffers President, has been a leader in the staffing industry for over almost forty years and she supports and listens to the individual needs of each of our staff members. Each of us at Staffers knows that Beth has an “open door” policy and she is invested in of our departments and gives valuable insight.
3. Think in terms of contributions, not job titles.
Just like Thanksgiving dishes, each person brings something unique. A team becomes stronger when those contributions are valued. Teams are stronger when individuals feel that their unique contributions are recognized and valued. At Staffers, Carlie is one of our recruiters but also has a talent in technical issues and deep understanding of our software. Carlie is our to-go for any computer issues or how to best use our software tools for communication with our clients and temporary employees weekly.
4. Express gratitude out loud.
Thank coworkers. Recognize effort. Celebrate wins, big or small. Gratitude grows when it is shared. In our Staffers office, we have a HUGE orange bell that we ring when a recruiter makes a placement. The whole team cheers on the recruiter and sales person for their success!
Why Gratitude Makes Teams Better
Workplace gratitude delivers real benefits:
- Higher morale
- Improved collaboration
- Less burnout
- Stronger retention
- More creative problem-solving
- Greater connection among coworkers
People who feel appreciated show up differently. Teams that support each other perform better.
This Thanksgiving, Bring Gratitude to the Table
Whether you are gathered with family, friends, or coworkers this week, remember that the spirit of Thanksgiving is not limited to one day or one meal.
At work, much like at the Thanksgiving table, we are better together.
Take a moment to appreciate what others bring to your workplace table. Take pride in what you contribute. And carry a mindset of gratitude into the weeks and months ahead.
From all of us at Staffers, we are grateful for the opportunity to support our clients, candidates, and community. We wish you a warm, joyful, and meaningful Thanksgiving.
