Constructive Criticism: Improve Your Feedback Skills

Giving constructive criticism is one of the most difficult aspects of being an employer but is one of the most important ways to keep your office running smoothly and efficiently. Providing constructive criticism can be tough, but being proactive about it can strengthen your communication skills as an employer and company. As one of the leading staffing firms in Jackson, MS, we spend a lot of time thinking about how constructive criticism and feedback can help our employees achieve their goals and jump start their career. We need constructive criticism to grow in a positive way. However, giving feedback is not always the easiest thing to do, and its one of the many reasons why giving constructive criticism is something we avoid or put off. Here are some easy ways to give constructive feedback.

1. Communicate frequently: Don’t wait until something is wrong to give constructive feedback. This allows for potential negative behaviors to become worse over time, which can cause problems in the office. Also, don’t wait until an employee makes a mistake to give them feedback. When you’re employee does something good, compliment them! By giving positive feedback when an employee is doing something well, it will be a positive reinforcement for them to continue with the same behavior.

2. Don’t just end the conversation with constructive criticism: Make sure you give suggestions for how to improve the situation. Ending on a negative comment may not have the desired effect that you want, but coming up with a solution will give you and your employee some direction.

3. Never give negative feedback in front of others: There is no need to humiliate your employee or put them on the defensive immediately, which will more than likely occur if you give someone constructive criticism in front of other people. This could cause unnecessary embarrassment, which is not the lesson of receiving constructive feedback.

4. Schedule regular performance reviews: The best way to keep everyone on the same page is to schedule performance reviews. That way there is a clear time to give some constructive criticism, and it is a great way for you to touch base with all of your employees in an encouraging and regular way.
