Looking for a job isn’t as easy as just googling “jobs” or scrolling through Indeed and LinkedIn. You might see thousands of available jobs, but are you qualified for them? Are you even interested in them? Many people apply for whatever jobs they see available, even if they don’t meet the qualifications. Casting the widest net possible might seem like the best job search strategy, but we have some tips for how to narrow down your search and get better results.


1. Avoid applying through job boards when possible.

Job boards can be a great way to start the search process, but if the opportunity presents itself, applying through the company’s website may help set you apart. If this isn’t an option, you can also confirm that the position is still open by giving them a call. You’ll immediately stand out, if only because recruiters will be able to connect your voice to a name and resume. If you apply on a job board, you can also follow up by confirming it was received.

2. Take care of yourself during your job search.

This might seem like an unimportant step, but don’t be fooled! As Kristina Leonardi writes for The Muse, “Conventional wisdom says that looking for a job is a full-time job—but I beg to differ. It’s unrealistic to think you can spend all day searching for listing and submitting resumes without getting burnt out pretty quickly.” As they recommend, rather than devoting all your time to applications, set aside a few hours every day when you’re most energized. If you’re discouraged or burned out by the application process, this energy might come across in your applications and interviews.

3. Make sure recruiters know where to find you.

Most recruiters are usually actively looking for candidates to fill their jobs. Therefore, be sure to update your LinkedIn profile. The more details you can provide in regards to your previous experiences, the more likely a recruiter will seek you out. Also, make sure your status is listed as “open to work” to encourage recruiters to reach out.

4. Jumpstart your job search by working with a staffing firm!

A great place to start your job search is with a staffing firm. Not only will they have jobs you can’t find anywhere else, but their connection to businesses in your industry will likely help you to get noticed. Also, if you’re not sure what career you want to start with, you can work in temporary or temp-to-perm positions, which you are more likely to find with a staffing firm. This is a great way to grow your skills if you’re trying to break into a new industry.
